You've got lies: Chick flicks

Beth Spraul, from Capital Hill Baptist Church, has written an article titled You’ve Got Lies: Chick Flicks and the World’s Approach to Men and Marriage. H/T Carolyn McCulley.

I haven't read it all yet, because it's an article and not a blog post, but it looks interesting. Here's an excerpt:

Unlike pornography, it is possible to engage in watching “chick flicks” and have it be a sin-free activity. With pornography, the very act of viewing it is always harmful and always a sin. However, before you assume you are able to watch chick-flicks and read romance novels without harmful effects to your expectations for men and marriage, consider the following lies often propagated by these movies, and think about them in comparison to what Scripture teaches ...

Don't get me started on 'reality bites.' How could Ryder choose that go nowhere loser Ethan Hawke over Ben stiller? Why does Hollywood make the girls make bad decisions and then promote these as the right decisions? I read the article and it was good. Timely considering Sweet home Alabama was on over the weekend.

Oh? You know, I haven't seen Reality Bites (I know, I know). But hey, apparently Archie is going to marry Betty instead of Veronica, so it's not just women making bad decisions ...

But yes, I thought the article was fair.

Sadly the destructive problems of pornogrpahy is no longer just associated with men. One reason it has and is continuing to blur into mainstream entertainment is due to the rise of women who are indulging/accepting in this. (or made by the media to accept/endorse it) Just like it destroys men's hearts and minds and effects their relationships, so it is for women. Do I have an answer to the problem - no. As a society we like to water complex social problems into simple one dimensional ones so we can apply a simple one dimensional answer. This is because we have a cause/effect mentality of solving problems and not a wholisitc one. In one former soviet state, the rise of divorce, affiars, domestic disputes actually ten folded after 6 months of desperate housewives being screened. Sadly, they see this as Christian tv from the Christian west! I need a break and will utilize my break time to actually return to work.

I thought the article was well worth a read and in recognising the temptation we all face to just judge people by their looks, height, dress sense (or lack of) etc.

The big surprise and encouragement to me was the practical use of mentoring men. It seems a little used tool in ministry in the Sydney Anglican scene...

Thanks Pete. Yes, I am sure women are not immune or blame-free ... Can't say I have a solution either.

Thanks for coming by Charlie. Yes, I thought the article was worth reading in terms of "knowing your own heart" ... As for mentoring men, I assume you are referring to CJ Mahaney's book. Yes, there is always more room for that, and I think men being men they would rarely discuss any such thing with each other naturally, but there was quite a serious challenge for women to mentor each other in this area also.
